Chloramphenicol Works by preventing bacteria from producing Proteins that are essential to them. Without these Proteins the cannot grow, replicate and increase in numbers.

Chloramphenicol therefore controls the infection and remaining bacteria die or are killed by the body's immune system.

Chloramphenicol eye drops are administered into the eye to treat a type of eye infection called bacteria conjunctivitis, which can be caused by various types or bacteria.

Putting the drops directly into the eye allows the chloramphenicol to act directly on the bacteria that are causing the infection.


Corneal ulcer, bacterial conjunctivitis, trachoma, ocular infections.


Chloramphenicol eye drops are contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity and/or toxic reaction, to chloramphenicol or any other component of the medication.

DIRECTION: Use the solution within 21 days after first opening the vial.




If irritation persists or increases, discontinue the use and consult physician.

Do not touch the dropper tip or other dispensing tip to any surface since this may contaminate the solution.


It is important to tell your pharmacist what medicines you are already using, including those bought without a Prescription & herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine.

Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any new medicines while using this one to ensure that the combination is safe. If you are using any other eye drops or ointments, you should consult your doctor before using this medicine.

If you are using more than one type of eye drop you should administer them at least five minutes apart, to prevent the second drop washing away the first. Use eye gels or ointments last.

Adverse Effects

Mild burning or stinging in the eye. This should soon disappear as your eyes get used to the new drops. If discomfort in the eye continues speak with your doctor.

Blurred vision - This usually disappears within a few minutes of applying the eye drops.

Do not drive or use machinery unless your vision is clear.

Dosage & Administration

Instil one or two drops in the affected eye (s) two to six-hourly for two to three days. The interval between applications may then be increased.

Treatment should be continued for at least two days after the eye appears normal. Systemic absorption from ophthalmic solutions may be minimised by applying pressure to the tear duct after application of the eye drops.


Accidental ingestion of the drug is unlikely to cause any toxicity due to the low content of antibiotic. It is advisable to keep medication out of reach of children.

If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia occur after undesired eye contact. the exposed eye(s) should be irrigated with copious amounts of room temperature water for at least 15 minutes.

If symptoms persist after 15 minutes of irrigation, an ophthalmologic examination should be considered.

Storage/Handling Recommendations

Preserve in tight container and store in refrigerator until dispensed.

Keep out of the reach of children.
