Chloramphenicol works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, replicate and increase in numbers.

Chloramphenicol therefore controls the infection and remaining bacteria die or are killed by the body's immune system.

Chloramphenicol ear drops are administered into the ear to treat various types of bacterial ear infections. Putting the drops directly into the ear allows the chloramphenicol to act directly on the bacteria that are causing the infection.

Chloramphenical ear drops are indicated for the short term treatment of infections in otitis externa due to chloramphenicol-sensitive organisms in patients with intact tympanic membranes.

Perforated tympanic membrane is considered a contra indication to the use of this medication in the external ear canal.

Chloramphenicol ear drops are contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity and/or toxic reaction to chloramphenicol or any of its components.

Discontinue promptly it sensitisation or irritation occurs.
