Pharmacology

Suppresses bacterial protein synthesis.

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption: Following IM administration, average Cmax is 11.6 mcg/mL at 60 min and therapeutic levels are maintained for 17 to 20 h for most susceptible gram-positive organisms. Following a 2-hour IV infusion, average Cmax is approximately 16 mcg/mL and therapeutic levels are maintained for 14 h for most susceptible gram-positive organisms.

Elimination: Urinary excretion following IM and IV administration ranges from 1.8% to 24.8% and 4.9% to 30.3%, respectively. The t½ is 5.4 h. Biliary excretion is an important route of elimination.

Indications

Lincomycin is indicated for the treatment of severe infections, caused by Lincomycin-susceptible microorganisms:

Streptococci, Staphylococci, Pneumococci.

The antibiotic is particularly suitable in case of hypersensitivity to penicillin in the following cases:

  • broncho-pulmonary infections;
  • genital infections;
  • abdominal infections after surgical intervention;
  • sepsis;
  • infections of the skin and soft tissues;
  • acute and chronic osteomyelitis.

Contra-indications

 

Hypersensitivity to lincomycin, any component of the formulation, or clindamycin; minor bacterial infections or viral infections.

Precautions/Warnings

Administration during pregnancy and breast-feeding is not recommended (only in case of vital indications).

Great care should be taken in patients with renal or liver malfunction, bronchial asthma and other allergic diseases.

Interactions

Aluminum salts: GI absorption of lincomycin may be decreased and delayed.

Erythromycin: May cause antagonism.

Neuromuscular blocking agents: May enhance the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents.

Adverse Effects

Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomitting, abdominal pains, pseudo membranous colitis.

Lincomycin should be withdrawn immediately in cases of diarrhea, and in more severe cases, hospital treatment may be needed.

Skin allergic reactions are possible to occur with Lincomycin, in isolated cases, angioedema.

Transient disorders in hematopoiesis have also been reported, such as leucopenia, thrombocytopenia and etc.

Disorders in the liver and renal functions have also been encountered.

Inform your doctor of any adverse reaction related to drug use.

Dosage & Administration

Taken under the instruction of physician.

Adults:

The daily dosage of Lincomycin is 1.5 - 2 g, divided into 3-4 times.

Children (>1 month old):

30-60 mg/kg/day, divided into 3 or 4 times.

The capsules should be taken only with water 1 hr before or 2 hrs after meals.

Store in dry places, below 30°C and protect from light
