Pharmacology

Ranitidine is a competitive, reversible inhibitor of the action of histamine at the histamine H2-receptors, including receptors on the gastric cells.

Ranitidine does not lower serum Ca++ in hypercalcemic states. Ranitidine is not an anticholinergic agent.

Indications

Treatment of duodenal ulcer and benign gastric ulcer, esophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcers associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs).

Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage from stress ulceration.

Contra-indications

Pregnancy or breast-feeding; if you suffer, or have suffered in the past from dysfunction of the liver, the kidney, the blood system (e.g. coagulation,etc).

Precautions/Warnings

Use of this drug may, in rare cases, cause blurred vision. It is therefore advisable to take special care when driving or when operating dangerous machinery.

There may be diagnostic interference in laboratory tests for urine protein and gastric acid secretory functions.

Safety for the use in children has not been established.

Interactions

Notify your doctor if you are using drugs affecting the CNS (tranquilizers, sedatives and hypnotics, for parkinson’s disease, epilepsy), anticoagulants, theophylline, phenytoin, metoprolol, procainamide.

Allow at least two hours between taking this medicine and antacids, ketoconazole.

Adverse Effects

In addition to the desired effect of the drug, some side effects may appear such as skin irritation, dizziness, headache.

Side effects requiring special attention: Mental confusion, fever (rare), blurred vision (rare).

Dosage & Administration

According to physician’s instruction only

Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

This medicine is to be taken at regular intervals.

Missed dose: If you have forgotten to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but never take two doses together.

Directions for use: Do not chew, do not halve and do not crush. This drug should be taken whole with a small quantity of water.

Store in a dry and cool place.
