Pharmacology

Acyclovir is acyclic analog of deoxyguanosine and is converted to Acyclovir monophosphate by herpes-specific viral thymidine kinase.

Acyclovir monophosphate is then converted to the diphosphate and the triphosphate interferes with herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA polymerase and inhibits viral DNA replication.

Since it is selectively taken up and converted to the active triphosphate from by HSV infected cells. Topical Acron is effective in reducing the severity and duration of primary herpes genitalis infection and may be beneficial in the management of recurrent herpes genitalis and herpes labialis.

Indications

Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membrane including initial and recurrent herpes genitalis and herpes labialis. Treatment of initial and recurrent mucocutaneous herpes simplex (HSV-A and HSV-2) infections in immuno-compromised patients.

Precautions/Warnings

Avoid contact with eyes. Use a finger cot or rubber gloves to prevent autoinoculation of other body sites and transmission of the infection to others. Therapy should be initiated as soon as possible following the onset of signs and symptoms of herpes infection. Treatment should be continued for 7 days.

Regular Papanicolaou smears at a more frequent interval are recommended since patients with genital herpes may be more likely to develop cervical cancer. Avoid sexual activity if either partner has signs and symptoms of herpes genitalis, since acyclovir will not prevent recurrences or transmission of herpes to others.
