Doppelherz aktiv Omega 3 by 30

Pharmacology

Doppelherz® aktiv Omega 3 maintains a healthy cardiovascular system by maintaining blood low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the normal range.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (FA) reduce blood triglycerides (TG), through a mechanism which is not completely known. The possible modes of action are: inhibition of acyl CoA: 1,2-diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) - DGAT catalyses the formation of triglycerides (TG) from diacylglycerol and acyl CoA; also, Competitive inhibition of FA synthesis, Increased peroxisomal ß-oxidation.
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) competes with arachidonic acid (AA) for the synthesis of eicosanoids. Eicosanoids  synthesized from EPA or AA show different properties:
Substrate Eicosanoid Activity
EPA Prostaglandine I3 Vasorelaxant, anticoagulant
Thromboxane A3 Almost inactive
Leucotriene B5 Slightlty pro-inflammatory
AA Prostaglandine I2 Vasorelaxant, anticoagulant
Thromboxane A2 Vasoconstrictor, procoagulant
Leucotriene B4 Strongly pro-inflammatory

Omega-3 fatty acids in combination with folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 have a positive influence on the homocysteine levels and for the balance of cholesterol and triglycerides. Treatment combining folic acid with vitamins B6 and B12 maximizes the activity of the two major metabolic pathways processing homocysteine: Vitamin B6 is necessary for the activity of cystathionine β-synthase, which converts homocysteine into cystathionine; tetrahydrofolate and vitamin B12 support the methylation of homocysteine to methionine.

Omega-3 from Doppelherz® can be used to improve light mood disorders and as an adjunct to antidepressive therapies. In addition to their cardioprotective effects, omega-3 fatty acids show positive effects on certain psychiatric disorders: Postpartum depression, Depression, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia. Sufficient EPA/DHA in the membrane is a prerequisite for the function of the endocannabinoid signaling pathway. Endocannabinoid signaling plays an important role in mood regulatory mechanisms.

Omega-3 from Doppelherz® can be used to delay the onset of degenerative eye diseases. In addition to their cardioprotective effects, omega-3 fatty acids show positive effects on vision and the prevention of eye degenerative diseases such as: neovascular age-related macular degeneration, geographic atrophy, retinitis pigmentosa. Omega-3 is protective and promotes eye sight: DHA is Anti-inflammatory, Antiangiogenesis, Antiapoptotic and promotes photoreceptors differentiation. DHA is the precursor of neuroprotectin, a compound that is able to inhibit retinal cell apoptosis induced by oxidative stress.

Pharmacokinetics

Since omega-3 are fatty acids, they are incorporated into cell membranes. Plasma levels are therefore not measurable. Oral folic acid preparations are almost fully absorbed: 80 to 87% of the reference plasma levels observed after intramuscular injection. Maximal plasma concentrations is reached 1h30mins after ingestion. Due to efficient renal clearance, basal plasma levels are measured 12h after ingestion.

Vitamin B12 is bound to the intrinsic factor in the small-intestine. This protects it from metabolism through gut bacteria and allow its specific transport through the epithelial barrier. Absorption efficacy limits the total amount of vitamin B12 to be absorbed after a single oral dose to approximately 1.5 µg.

Indications

Maintains a healthy cardiovascular system. Triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol and blood homocysteine lowering effect reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases, arteriosclerosis and myocardial infarction, Improves blood fluidity, therapeutic adjunct to statins. Also, delays the onset of degenerative eye diseases, improve light mood disorders and as an adjunct to anti-depressive therapies.

Contra-indications

Hypersensitivity to any of its components, in particular patients with a known sensitivity or allergy to fish.

Precautions/Warnings

Adhere to the stated dosage. A slightly increased bleeding risk has been observed during consumption of omega-3 at very high doses (>4 g per day). There is no risk of increased bleeding when the recommendation of 2 capsules per day is observed.

Interactions

Patients receiving anticoagulants should be monitored when taking omega-3.

Adverse Effects

In patients with elevated TG levels, a slight increase in LDL-cholesterol might be observed in the first weeks of treatment. These should come back to normal values. If this is not the case, cease the treatment.

Dosage & Administration

Adults:

Two Capsules daily at meal with enough liquid. Do not chew.

Do not exceed the stated recommended daily dosage.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet.
