Ampicillin is a semi–synthetic amino penicillin, with a good spectrum of bacteria activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative micro- organism. Amplicillin is stable in presence of gastric acid and may be given without regard to meals.
It acts through inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide and bacterial cell explodes due to internal pressure.
Its absorption in blood plasma is better and has higher and more sustained blood levels.
It has low incidence of diarrhoea. It is active against Shigella and H. influenza.
It is also more active against those microbes which are sensitive to Penicillin-G; in addition many gram negative bacilli like E. colli, Proteus, Salmonella are inhibited.
Known history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any of the penicillins.
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk
Eldely: No known problem.
Dosage & Administration
Intramuscular or intravenous 250 to 500 mg every six hours.
Bacterial endocarditis, Meningitis or Septicaemia: 1 to 2 g every 3 to 4 hours.
Listeriosis: 50 mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours.
Neonates up to 2 kg of body weight: 25 to 50 mg every 12 hours during the first week of life, thereafter 50 mg every eight hours.
Neonates over 2 kg: 50 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours during the first week of life, thereafter every six hours.
Infants up to 20 kg: 12.5 mg per kg body weight every 6 hours.
Infant over 20 kg should receive the usual adult dose.
Store in a cool & dry place.
